Closeup on Haiti: How a Haitian Photographer Got The World To See Haiti Through His Lenses

Written by kreyolicious with 2 Comments

Haitian photographer Conrad Schutt is making one of his dreams come true as we speak. He’s closing in on Haiti’s beaches, hot spots, and getting the whole world to see Haiti through his lenses. Not only is he one of the most popular Haiti-based photographer’s, but his photos have gotten the attention of major cruise companies and firms, eager to use his skills as a shutterbug.

Kreyolicious: Do you think that a photo can change the world?
Conrad Schutt: Of course, through out history there has been so many events where just one photo was enough to tell a new story, create change. For example, if you search Haiti right now on you still see images of the earthquake, hurricanes, and other various things. While I don’t discount that these are actual facts, it doesn’t quite tell the full story. The problem is that we don’t have enough advocates to show the other side. So if I can change one person’s opinion with each picture, it is definitely a start in the right direction.

Kreyolicious: What are some of the most exciting things that have happened to you since you started sharing your pics with the world and on social media?
Conrad Schutt: I think one of the most touching moments i’ve had was when I was invited to be the feature artist for the city of North Miami for Haitian Heritage Month. The day that I was setting up the Expo, there was plenty of people in the Library where the expo was happening. I had a lot of Haitian American kids that were shocked at some of the pictures because they never thought that there was such beauty in Haiti. There was one particular gentleman that stopped in front of a picture of the Citadelle with his son and started talking about it to him, the pride in his voice as he was explaining the meaning of the Citadelle was humbling. A picture that I took became part of a family moment. Alot of times even I take for granted what I do and maybe don’t even realize the reach that it has. But when you receive all the comments of encouragement from people from all over, it definitely makes it worth it, and just drives you to do that much more. Most people do not realize what taking some of these pictures take. It is sometimes a full day to just catch on single moment. But, in the end, it is more than worth it.

Kreyolicious: What’s next for you?
Conrad Schutt: Right now, I’m currently around the country. I bought a vehicle specifically for that journey, and will be a tourist myself in the country, going to visit places that I have never been too. I’m really excited about that, and really can’t wait to make it down south. Cascade Pichon in particular is a place that I think will be drone heaven. Besides that, once I’ve completed the whole country, would love to do expos in the US to showcase the raw beauty that Haiti has to offer. It’s like your earlier question of can one picture change the world? For sure it will be a step in the right direction.
